Two Stars. Same $12M gold AAV for 2026-27. Same night need on the 84-game slate: $143K. That’s the paycheck tease. It is not the ranking.
Robo had the better regular season. 45-51-96 in 82. Mikko went 22-55-77 in 64 and stopped putting pucks on net. If I only wrote Octobers, this would be a different take. I don’t.
The playoff player
I take Mikko because he has already done the part of the year this franchise lives for. 99 playoff games. 44 goals. 126 points. 1.27 a night. Robo has 62 games and 52 points. That’s a lot of May. It is not a Cup. Mikko has one. 2022: 20 games, 25 points. Then he got here and did it in our sweater. First Dallas spring: 18 games, 9 goals, 22 points.
That’s the presence. Not a speech. A winger who has won, who has produced when the ice shrinks, and who already scored in a Stars playoff series. We didn’t trade for a regular-season passer. We traded for that.

He stopped shooting
Last year is the thing I actually want fixed. 139 shots. The 55-goal year had 307. He scored 22 on 22.1 expected goals, so he wasn’t missing. He just stopped generating. Still 20 minutes a night. 77 in 64 would be 101 points over 84 games. The counting line was fine. The shot map is why people started talking about him like a $12 million setup man.
I don’t think that’s who he is. I think that’s what happens when Robo takes 295 shots and Mikko’s job becomes find him.

Year two
The lineup I want is Robo with Hintz and Wyatt with Rantanen. Don’t stack the stars. Split them and somebody has to cover two looks. Put Mikko next to Wyatt and he has to shoot. He can’t just find Robo. Gulutzan can still run them together on the power play. I’m curious who plays with those two duos.
Health is the quiet half. Play 80 at last year’s rate and you’re already at 28 goals and 96 points. Get him back toward three shots a night and the 30-goal version is just him finishing chances he already knows how to finish. The spring tape says he still can. Last year we only asked for the passer.
If he shows up, and if he shoots
What to watch
The shot comes back if the job changes. Last year he lived next to a guy who took 295. Put him with Wyatt at 5-on-5 and the night is not get it to Robo. It’s Mikko from the slot, still 20 minutes, still on the power play. That’s the mechanism. Not a heater. A different look.
October is the first read. I want three shots a night, not 2.2. I want even-strength attempts, not a 32-point power play and a quiet 5-on-5. If he’s at 3+ through the first ten games, this take is on track. If he’s at 2.1 again with the same ice, last year wasn’t a blip.
Through the year I’m watching three things. Games. If he gets to 80, last year’s rate already gets you 28 and 96. Shot volume by month, not just the point totals, because 77 in 64 hid a 139-shot winter. And who Gulutzan hangs on those two duos. The pairs feel locked. The third man will tell you whether Mikko is a second hammer or a guest again.
The desk habit stays the same. $143K a night, 84 times. After a game I want the shot count next to the paycheck. Helpers are fine. They are not the question. Open the card. Watch whether he’s generating again.
